A new abdomen, after pregnancy.

Removal of excess skin and fat, plus repair of the rectus muscles. Abdominoplasty treats what diet and exercise cannot: excess skin and separated muscles after pregnancy or major weight loss.

What it is

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgical procedure that:

  • Removes excess skin from the abdomen (left over after weight loss or pregnancy)
  • Removes fat beneath the skin (usually combined with liposuction)
  • Repairs the rectus muscles (diastasis recti - the muscle separation caused by pregnancy)
  • Repositions the navel

Types: mini-abdominoplasty - only the area below the navel; standard - a horizontal incision from hip to hip; extended - for post-bariatric patients with excess skin extending to the hips.

Medical transparency

Risks & contraindications.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks:

  • Seroma (fluid build-up) - minimised by the drains
  • Infection
  • Bleeding (haematoma)
  • A horizontal surgical scar (remains, but fades over time)
  • Skin necrosis (mainly in smokers)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (reduced by moving after surgery)
  • Reduced sensation in the lower abdomen (usually temporary)

Any specific risk is discussed at the pre-operative consultation. Written informed consent is required.

Frequently asked questions

The most frequent questions.

Mini or standard?+
Mini is for excess skin only below the navel. Standard is for larger concerns, plus repair of the rectus muscles.
Can it be combined with liposuction?+
Yes, often - liposuction of the hips complements the result of abdominoplasty.
Will I be able to play sport again?+
Yes, fully after 3 months. Some patients report a stronger core after the rectus muscle repair.
Can I still have children afterwards?+
Technically yes, but it is not recommended - the result would be compromised. It is best done once your family is complete.
Does the scar fade?+
The scar remains (usually hidden below bikini lines). Laser treatment after 6 months can fade it further.
Will my navel look different?+
No, it is repositioned. With standard abdominoplasty, the navel has a small circular scar around it.
